The nightmare appears to be over. Rogue ex-cop Christopher Dorner never came out of a Big Bear, California cabin where he was holed up after being surrounded by police -- and the cabin went up in flames -- on Tuesday afternoon.
There were some reports Tuesday night that a body had been found and identified as Dorner, but police later said it was untrue and, as of last night, the cabin remained too hot for investigators to enter.
A single shot was heard in the cabin before it went up in flames. Prior to that, Dorner engaged police in a fierce firefight and he allegedly killed another victim -- his fourth -- in a confrontation with sheriff's deputies earlier in the afternoon.
The hunt for Dorner came to a head on Tuesday just after noon after deputies received a report of a stolen car across the street from where authorities had set up their command post and near where Dorner's burned- out pickup truck was found abandoned on Thursday.
Dorner reportedly first exchanged gunfire at approximately 12:45 p.m. when a California Department of Fish and Wildlife officer recognized a suspect that matched Dorner's description traveling in the opposite direction. That officer pursued Dorner and his vehicle was hit with gunfire before the suspect took off on foot.
It was during a second confrontation that two San Bernardino County deputies were shot. One died at the hospital. The other is expected to live after undergoing surgery.
