PULLMAN, Wash. – The Fresno State baseball team snapped its losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Washington State Cougars on Friday evening in Pullman, Wash.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars took an early lead, scoring one with an RBI double in the bottom of the first.
After four quiet innings, back-to-back hits from Eddie Saldivar and Rocco Peppi put the Bulldogs on the board to tie the game at one. Grady Morgan launched the Diamond 'Dogs into the lead with a rocket over the right field wall to make it a 3-1 game.
Washington State tied it up in the sixth with a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the inning. The Cougars reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth.
Tommy Hopfe led off the top of the ninth with a single followed by a double smoked down the right field line by Grady Morgan. An RBI from Ben Newton plated Tommy Hopfe to tie the game. The Bulldogs took the lead when a fielding error at third base gave Grady Morgan the opportunity to score.
Tommy Hopfe came in the close in the bottom of the ninth and retired three straight batters, locking in a 5-4 win for the Diamond 'Dogs.
NOTES
Zach Statzer earned his first win of the season with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched.
Tommy Hopfe earned his conference-leading eighth save of the season.
The Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing streak and extended their winning streak over the Cougars to seven games.
